This body of work represents over five years of traversing Australia, capturing hundreds of rolls of film, and immersing myself in numerous live shows and events to document the vibrant Australian Hip Hop scene. Beyond the performances, many of these images were taken in the artists' homes and neighborhoods, offering an intimate glimpse into their personal lives.
As an artist, my camera has become a passport to a world often hidden from the public eye: the backstage realm of talented musicians. This space, both alluring and intimidating, is typically reserved for die-hard fans and the entourage of fame, filled with free beer and the electric anticipation of performance. Yet, it also holds moments of quiet introspection, last-minute rehearsals, and personal preparation.
My photographs chronicle my journey from an outsider to a participant within the inner circle of the Australian hip-hop community. They capture the tension between the need for talent and the power of relationships in achieving acceptance and belonging. Through my lens, I explore whether true acceptance stems from skill or the connections fostered within this exclusive group. This body of work is a visual narrative of seeking validation and finding my place in a world where both artistic prowess and social bonds are essential.
